Arts to Zion Studio Tour

I invited my good friend and artist Royden Card to share my studio space during the 2019 Arts to Zion Studio Tour. His vivid acrylic landscapes and fascinating woodcuts were a great combination with my watercolor paintings. We had a great turnout and enjoyed visiting with the collectors during the Martin Luther King weekend.

"Famous" Grafton Schoolhouse Painting Finds a New Home

A little plein air painting of the old Grafton Schoolhouse, which was featured in Plein Air magazine's "Postcards from the Road" page, has found a new home. Architect Eric Roberts from Nevada, an accomplished watercolorist in his own right, visited my studio and had to have the painting. You  can read about the painting in the September/October issue of Plein Air Magazine and in American Watercolor Weekly.

Favorite Oil Painting

Janae chooses her favorite Roland Lee oil painting

A talented art student named Janae stopped by my art gallery for a visit and I asked her to choose a favorite painting. She chose "Virgin River Glow." I'm sure she will be a successful artist in the future.

New Oil Paintings Coming...

I decided to spend the month of July working on some landscape paintings in oil. I was inspired by a recent plein air workshop with Brad Holt. Some of the paintings turned out pretty good, so this fall you might see a few on exhibit at the art shows and at my galleries. Here's a sneak peek at some oils in progress in the studio.

Budding Artists Visit My Studio

My daughter's friend Kirstin Anderson teaches weekly art classes to children in Cedar City, Utah. She brought some of the students to St. George today for a visit to my studio and gallery, as well as make some pottery, and visit the St. George Art Museum. The young people were interested in my watercolor paintings, but especially liked the travel sketch books. They had lots of good questions and it was fun talking to them.

Art on Wheels, My New Travel Studio

Six Pac Super Mini Camper and Toyota 4 x 4
My new Six Pac Super Mini camper traveling art studio on location at Arches National Park
It's not really new--in fact I would call it pure vintage--but it is going to be my new studio on wheels. Nellie and I took a trip to Moab last week to pick up this sweet little ride. We purchased it from a great couple who have owned it since day one, and used it to explore the deserts and canyons around the southwest. They since upgraded to a beautiful new rig and reluctantly said goodbye to this little Toyota 4x4 and Six Pac Super Mini Camper. I'm hoping to infuse some new life in it as a travel studio. The camper has just enough room to handle my painting gear, and enough windows that I can actually paint from inside on cold winter days in the hills. Plus, a wonderful bed for an afternoon nap. I tested it out at Arches National Park and I think it is going to be just right. Two old duffers, still hard at work!

Studio in the Home

After maintaining a studio and gallery downtown for the past five years I decided it is time to simplify our life a little. So I've moved my painting studio back into our home in St. George. It took a little work to get rid of 20 years of office furniture and other art junk, but it feels great! I like the new digs. I'm streamlined, lean, and mean--and I can work in my pajamas til all hours of the night. Plus I really like having lunch with Nellie each day.

A trip to Zion National Park, and a Visit to my Studio

Visitors to Roland Lee Art Studio

I had a nice visit at my studio this morning with three nice ladies spending the weekend at Zion National Park. Theresa, Brenda, and Linda were visiting from northern Utah, basking in the warm sun and cool canyons of Zion. While there they purchased a "Century of Sanctuary" book and one of my Zion prints at the ZNHA bookstore. They also enjoyed the Zion Centennial art show at the St. George Art Museum where they saw my original painting of Zion's West Temple. It's always fun to meet those who appreciate my work.

Art Collectors Visit Roland Lee Studio

the Midgleys at the Roland Lee Art Studio

I had a nice visit today at the studio from art collectors Brenda and Keith Midgley. They purchased a giclee print of my watercolor painting "5 Minutes of Fame" which is currently touring the nation with the Paint The Parks Top 100 exhibit. The Midgleys saw the original while it was on exhibit at the Kolb Gallery at Grand Canyon National Park.

GPS Leads Hawaiian Family to My Studio

The Kimokeo family from Hawaii visit Roland Lee Art Gallery

Kimo and Norma Kimokeo visited my studio today along with their daughters Kehau and Bethany. They were visiting Utah from Kaneohe, Hawaii, where Kimo is a well-known musician and performer. When I asked how they found me they said they just looked up "Interesting things to see in St. George, Utah" on their GPS and it directed them to my gallery. I had no idea a GPS could do that. It's amazing what modern technology can do. We had a nice studio visit and they got to see my latest painting of Scotney Castle Tower in progress. They were excited to be the first people in the world to get a glimpse of it. Everyone else will get to see it in a few days too!

Studio Visit from the Cub Scouts

Tonight I had a studio visit from a group of Cub Scouts and their leaders. Part of their requirements is to learn about art careers. After talking about careers I had them come into my painting room and showed them the watercolor process. Afterwards each person received a free box of art cards to take home with them.

Famous Artists and Art Collectors

Red Cliffs First Ward Scouts visit the Roland Lee Art Gallery

This evening a group of young artists and future art collectors dropped by my art studio for a tour. After showing them around the studio we talked about the role of artists and how we interpret the world around us. They had some great questions and I have no doubt some will be professional artists one day. I gave each young man a print and a box of cards to take home with them. The boys were from the Red Cliffs First Ward Boy Scouts.
